A man due to testify in a court case regarding Islamic mortgages has failed to show up when required.
Joseph Adam was supposed to attend a court-sanctioned discovery examination in the receivership case of two insolvent Islamic mortgage providers based in Toronto, Canada, The Star reports.
According to the news provider, Mr Adam is mentioned in court records as having previously transported gold bars to Egypt and presenting them to Islamic law scholars there.
Joel Levitt, Mr Adam's lawyer, claimed he had no knowledge of his client's whereabouts, while he was also non-the-wiser about any possible contact information.
In an email response to The Star, Mr Levitt stated: "I am not in a position to comment on any of your questions."
The case of the Islamic mortgage providers is likely to be hindered by the no-show, suggesting it may rumble on for longer than initially anticipated.
It was recently reported that Toronto-based bank UM Financial, which partnered with an Ontario credit union to provide Islamic mortgages and other products, had collapsed - leaving many Muslim homeowners uncertain as to what the future held for their property .
